My father would watch this on Remembrance Day in total silence with a tear in his eye as he thought of his comrades who didn’t get that chance

The only thing missing: silence after the last note , whose resonance is cut by the abrupt applaud.... Painful

What we need to remember is that this magnificent work of genius started out with a BLANK PAGE. Atheists can seem to explain the Universe any way they wish, but they have no idea how a person was able to create this OUT FROM A BLANK PAGE. Look at your desk. Take out some empty typing paper. Elgar used blank manuscript paper. All it had was lines on it. Nothing else. Just lines. Something about his brain allowed this to occur. I have no idea what it was. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

We just this morning visited the place of Elgar’s birth and, after listening to this wonderful piece again, find it so hard to understand the vitriol which was heaped on the work of this gifted, (largely self taught) British writer?

The late Colin Davis was one of my favorite, perhaps "the" favorite of contemporary conductors, for me. He used to guest conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra decades ago when Seiji Ozawa was Music Director and the principal conductor, and Ozawa was excellent, but the exquisite Colin Davis was so elegant and the best. Probably I heard him conduct , as I sat in the balcony, Mozart or someone who required a refined manner interpretation, just as here with Elgar. All I can say is that I was in the right place at the right time to hear Colin Davis live more than once. (So interesting to watch his understated manner here in this video. That's exactly how I remember him so many years ago - and the sense that he was delivering a performance close to what was intended by the composer.)

Considered to be one of the most melodic songs to be created. A person can interpret its meaning in so many ways which makes variations unique to the listener. There is hope, light, mystery and death. Yet, from death comes resurrection into the light once more. One could say that even the resurrection itself mirrors the universe and combines everything else into one opus such as this gem gives us. An incredible performance by the orchestra along with long time conductor Sir Colin Davis. A beautiful piece which will remain as timeless as our limitless imaginations can be.

Yes, he was !!! When I listen to this version I am thinking of the late Queen Elizabeth II. What a remarkable Queen she was, I was in correspondence with her for many years (replies came from her ladies-in-waiting.) The last letter I got from Balmoral was three days before she died. Even though I am Finnish, I met and talked with her three times in the UK. I am still thinking of her every day, she was unique!! Greetings from Finland !!

Velice krásná část, motiv připomíná trochu styl volných vět velkých koncertů Ludwiga van Beethovena. Jemně, citlivě a přitom velice precizně podáno. Děkuji za nahrávku a srdečně zdravím z České republiky, oblasti města Rakovník. ✋

Such a great version. When this movement is played separate from the rest of the variations (most often as a memorial piece), it is often taken a little slower. But this seems to be the perfect tempo for this.
